The Basilica of San Francesco, that was built in the second half of 13th century, it's a building in stones and brick in simple gothic style, its construction was finished in 14th century, while the bell tower was added in 16th century. The Basilica has one navata and encloses one of the masterpiece of all the renaissance painting, the Bacci Chapel with the cycle of frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross, painted from Piero della Francesca between 1452 and 1466. The topic of the cycle is drawn from the Golden Legend of Jacopo da Varagine. The frescoes are placed on three levels on the sidewalls and on the bottom, in the disposition of the scenes, Piero della Francesca did not respect the chronological course but it developed the symmetry between the several painted scenes: up are represented the scenes in the open air, in the center are court scenes and in the low side are battle scenes.

In the Basilica are other chapels between which the Tarlati Chapel with an Annunciation attributed to Luca Signorelli, in another chapel is a Crucifix painted from a contemporary of Cimabue and in another one is the funeral monument to jurisconsult Francesco Roselli (15th century). Much beautiful is also the rose-window of the facade of the Basilica with a glass window executed in 1524 from Guillaume de Marcillat (1475-1529) that represents San Francesco and Pope Onorio III.
