| We do not find ourselves in the Bryce Canyon in Utah, but in Valdarno, Tuscany! A few km from the Autosole A1 exit of Valdarno, between Florence and Arezzo. | |||

| Beginning in 1998 an area of the Balze of approximately 3000 hectares, in the municipalities of Castelfranco di Sotto, Loro Ciuffenna, Pian di Scò and Terranuova Bracciolini, has been declared Protect Natural Area of Local Interest. | |||
The Balze (cliffs) are one of the most beautiful and fascinating landscape aspects of the Valdarno. The Balze have been formed, therefore like has happened in the Bryce Canyon in Utah, from sediments deposit from a lake in the Pliocen and in the Pleistocen, the lake was approximately 20 km long, and occupied the current Valdarno. In the course of the millenium, when the lake has been withdrawn, its sediments have been subordinates to a continuous action of erosion from part of the atmospheric agents whom have models them until assuming the fascinating shapes known with the name of “Balze”. These strange natural formations can be seen in the municipalities of Terranova Bracciolini, Castelfranco di Sotto, Pian di Scò, Laterina and Reggello. |

Various are the routes that can be covered in order to visit the Balze, particularly fascinating is the zone of the Balze dell'Acqua Zolfina that can be reached from the highway exit of the Valdarno, following the indications for San Giovanni Valdarno, then after another roundabout we continue to Castelfranco di Sotto, covered approximately four kilometers and in proximity of a furniture factory, turns on the right for a small untarred road. After approximately five hundred meters we can park the car and continue on foot. |

Le Balze, with their pinnacle and spire of rocks represent a characteristic landscape, but little known, of the Valdarno, that deserves to be seen, also Leonardo da Vinci remained fascinated and he represented it in some of his paintings, like for example in the landscape in the background of the Gioconda. |
