LUCIGNANO TRAVEL GUIDE |
Val di Chiana, Arezzo |
Lucignano (about 3 500 inhabitants) is a small medieval village of Val di Chiana, located about 400 meters high, in the province of Arezzo, from which is 33 km.
The origin of Lucignano probably dates from the Roman Empire, when on the top of the hill where today stands the village there was a "castrum", which controls the road the connecting Siena to Arezzo. The village is being developed between the twelfth and fourteenth century, often disputed between Arezzo and Perugia, in the fourteenth century it became part of the Republic of Siena, who in 1371 circled it by walls and erected a fortress. In 1554 Lucignano became Florentine possession becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. |
