ANTIQUARIUM OF SANT'APPIANO

Next to the Church of Sant'Appiano is the Antiquarium of Sant'Appiano, home to some of abundant archaeological material came to light, in the neighboring areas, during the excavation that followed the first random discoveries of the century.

The small museum includes two rooms, in the first room are collected findings arising from the excavation of San Martino ai Colli, south of Sant'Appiano, where were found two Etruscan tombs, there are alabaster funerary urns of the Hellenistic period and Attic pottery with figure red. In the second room are the findings from two Etruscan tombs discovered in 1973 in farm Piazza, near Sant'Appiano, and some low medieval items found at Petrognano (Semifonte Castle destroyed by the Florentines at the beginning of the thirteenth century), there are exposed a number of medieval and Renaissance pottery typical of the Florentine area, some Etruscan funeral cippi and a pagan idol.

Type of objects: funeral urns, pottery.

Important works: Etruscan art, alabaster funerary urns including one with the representation of the myth of Proserpine, Hellenistic period Greek art, Attic ceramics red-figure, 6th-5th century BC. Painter Hesione (attr.), Kelebia second half fourth century BC.
