The town of Castelfiorentino is part of the province of Florence, crossed by the river Elsa, is located 50 meters above sea level, it has around 18 000 inhabitants and is an important industrial area.
Castelfiorentino extends on a hill, along the Via Francigena, on the ruins of a Roman settlement and is composed of one ancient part and a modern part. In the past, Castelfiorentino became feud of the family Cadolingi of Tuscany, it was later held by the Counts Alberti, then, in the twelfth century, it became a possession of the bishop of Florence. |

In 1149, the Florentines gave the town its present name. Castelfiorentino was closely involved in many conflicts between Siena and Florence, became the main outpost of Florence and seat of a Podestà. In 1521 was the scene of devastation and fighting by the Spanish militia.
