THE IMPORTUNO BY MICHELANGELO
Palalzzo Vecchio, Florence

Behind the marble group of Hercules and Caco by Baccio Bandinelli, to the right the entrance of Palazzo Vecchio, near the corner of the palace, can be seen carved on a stone near the base, a profile of the head of man: the so-called "Importuno" (Nuisance).

Close up of the figure of Importuno, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

Legend has it that Michelangelo, when he passed from this square, he was often stopped by a man who pressed him with his useless chatter.

One day Michelangelo as he passed near Palazzo Vecchio again encountered this man who annoyed him with his chatter, this time while the man spoke, Michelangelo had with him his chisel and mallet, with the hands behind his back against the base of the building, while bored listening to the nuisance, he cut the man profile in a panel.

For centuries the Florentines call this unique figure by Michelangelo "l'Importuno" (the nuisance).

This story that the image of the "Importuno" is the work of Michelangelo is probably only a legend, but the figure does exist and it's nice to discover it in the wall of the Palazzo Vecchio. Florence also reserves of these surprises.
