GREVE IN CHIANTI TRAVEL GUIDE
Chianti, Florence

Greve in Chianti is a beautiful country situated in a flat area between the hills of Chianti in Florence province, from which is about 30 km.

Greve in Chianti was founded on the margins of major communication networks that were part of the via Volterrana and via Francigena. Originally, in the eleventh century, was established a small settlement on the hill of San Francesco, later the hill was the site of an old hospital and then, from the late fifteenth century, of a small monastic settlement of the Franciscan Order. The village still remained a mere dependency of the castle of Montefioralle.

Since the Middle Ages the story of Greve is linked to its main square, which has always exercised the function of a market. Thanks to its position that allows easy access to Florence and the high Arno valley, and to its location midway between Florence and Siena, Greve soon became home to an important market, which takes place in the present Market Square (Piazza del Mercato), which was located within a densely populated area already rich in churches and rural churches and dotted with feudal castles and villages, the most important of which was precisely Montefioralle.

The oldest part of the village revolved around the convent of San Francesco and the Market Square, which soon became the main market place in the area, the square will remain substantially intact until the nineteenth century.

The square of the market, now Piazza Giovanni da Verrazzano, has the characteristic shape of elongated triangle, surrounded by porticos, in the center of the square is a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, grevigiano explorer and navigator, who on behalf of France explored and discovered many areas of the Atlantic coast of the United States and Canada, including the Bay of New York. One of the vertices of the square is occupied by the parish church of Santa Croce rebuilt in neoclassical style in the nineteenth century.
