Montaione is a village that is located on a hill, 342 meters above sea level, overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in an important archaeological area because many were the remains of Etruscan and Roman origin that were found. The town has about 3 700 inhabitants and still preserves remains of walls, towers and a postern dating from the medieval period.

The birth of the actual village goes back to medieval times, in 1257 Montaione became a free commune and then belong to Florence since 1369. Since the thirteenth century flourishing was the art of glass. Because of the German mines in 1944, were damaged the walls and destroyed almost all the towers and the main gates of the village.
