Montespertoli (12 000 inhabitants) is a village of medieval origin that extends on top of a hill, 257 meters above sea level, which overlooks the Arno Valley and the arc of the Apennines to the Apuan Alps. Its territory, mostly consists of rolling vineyards, olive groves and woodlands. Its strategic location, is only 30 km from Florence, can easily reach the main tourist cities, like Siena, Pisa, Volterra and San Gimignano. In the past it was a free municipality, then definitely belong to Florence, who used his position to carry out its regional trade with major cities such as Volterra and Siena.
The zone where is situated Montespertoli is a wide hilly area between the Pesa and Elsa valleys about 35 km from Florence. The area produce red wines and its vineyards characterise the landscape. Lucardo, one of the most ancient and important towns in the zone, was founded during the era of the Longobards. In the area the castle of Poppiano belonged to the Guicciardini family and that of Montegufoni belonged to the Acciaioli family. The area was annexed as a Florentine county in the second half of the 12th century. The most important market in the area took place in San Pietro in Mercato, less than two kilometres from Montespertoli. But in 1465, Montespertoli, because of its important position on the road to Volterra, became the seat of this profitable appointment. The transfer of the market preceded that of the "podestà" seat, which took place in the 16th century.
