CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA TRAVEL GUIDE

Castiglione della Pescaia is one of the most beautiful medieval villages along the coast of Tuscany it lies a little over 20 km from Grosseto. Coming from the north should exit the 4 lanes road Aurelia in Follonica and from there follow the signs for Castiglione della Pescaia continue about 20 km along the road No. 322 until you reach Castiglione. Coming from the south, you must exit at Grosseto Sud from Aurelia and from there take the road No. 322 and follow it for about 20 km. By train line between Turin and Rome, Grosseto and Follonica station and from there mini bus / taxi.

The old walled medieval town of Castiglione della Pescaia is located on a hill overlooking the mouth of the river Bruna, it's now a popular seaside resort. Castiglione della Pescaia is a major tourist center and a fully equipped resort with beautiful beaches and clean sea, repeatedly rewarded by Legambiente and Touring Club.

Probably the actual Castiglione was the ancient Salembrum of the Romans, some of whose remains are visible at the end of the port, along the river Bruna. Starting from the tenth century until the thirteenth century the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia was under the control of Pisa, later became a free municipality. During the fifteenth century Castiglione della Pescaia was first conquered by the Medici, then was occupied by the Aragonese (1446) and finally came under the control of Piccolomini in Siena. Towards the middle of the sixteenth century it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Very beautiful is the old town, perched on the hill of Poggio Petriccio, is still largely surrounded by medieval walls built by Pisa and the Aragonese. In the center of town are preserved several interesting buildings like the eighteenth-century Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, built into a bastion of the medieval walls, and the sixteenth-century Church of St. John the Baptist, this church has on the portal for architrave, an early medieval bas-relief and has a distinctive circular bell tower. Just outside the town lies the eighteenth century Casa Rossa, access point to visit the Nature Reserve of Diaccia Botrona, last remnant of the extensive marshes that once covered the Maremma, along the road connecting Castiglione with Marina di Grosseto is the interesting Pineta del Tombolo that extends over 10 km along the coast.
