MAGLIANO IN TOSCANA TRAVEL GUIDE
Monte Argentario and Costa d'Argento, Grosseto

The origin of this city is Etruscan, subsequently became roman municipality with the name of Heba. In a aggrement stipulated from Uguccione of the Counts Aldobrandeschi in the year 1097 for the first time Magliano is indicated as center of a Court, perhaps already center of a castle.

Magliano in Toscana is a nice village encircled partially from a beautiful town-walls, one of the most complete fortifications of the Maremma. Its walls were built between the 13th and 15th century, are opened from three gates: Porta Nuova, Porta San Martino and Porta San Giovanni.

The town-walls were built in two different times. In the 13th-14th century the Counts Aldobrandeschi built the tract of wall on the South-East side, with square towers, the works were finished in 1323 as is written on a stone slab in the tower near San Giovanni Gate. Currently of this part of the ancient town- walls remains the short tract that comprises San Giovanni Gate with three square towers. The second phase of construction of the walls was led ahead from the Republic of Siena that in 15th century built the town-walls on the West side characterized from semicircular bastions. This side of the walls is the best conserved, present six semicircular towers with embrasures, the walls finished with a protrusion in bricks decorated with archs and merlons, they are still today visible to the left of the Porta Nuova. Continuing along the walls we reach the last gate of the town-walls, the Gate of San Martino.

Entering from San Giovanni Gate we take via Garibaldi, on the right we find the so-called Palace of Checco il Bello (the Beautiful), headquarters of the orvietan family of the Monaldeschi that used it like their rural residence. The palace is in local stone and the structure traces the outlines of the sienese architecture of 14th century. Continuing beyond, in the center of the village we find the Romanesque church with gothic elements, of San Giovanni Battista, built, probably, in 13th century, it has a renaissance facade, the inside to a single aisle conserve an interesting christening font in travertine and some frescoes of sienese school of 14th century. Little beyond we find the Palace of the Captain of the People (or Palace of the Priori), building that accommodated the Captain of the People and the Priori, it was built in 1425, on its facade are still visible some coats of arms of the captains who have inhabited it. In the vicinities of San Martino Gate is the church of San Martino in Romanesque style, built in 11th century, it has a facade in hewn stone and the door-posts of the portal decorates with two dragons, one of which ridden from a human figure. The inside, to Latin cross, is on two levels with the aisle, of rectangular plant, and the transept of 15th century. The rectangular apse is of gothic style. Inside are frescoes of sienese school of the 13th-14th century.

Outside from the town-walls, in the vicinities of San Giovanni Gate, left to report the church of the SS. Annunziata, with portal and architrave in travertine, the inside has only a nave with cross vault. Conserve a fragmentary frescoes decoration of senese school of the beginnings of 15th century. To sides of the altar are found the more interesting frescoes probably of the school of Andrea di Niccolò, on the high altar, is the more valuable piece present in the church: the "Madonna che allatta il Bambino" of Neroccio di Bartolomeo Landi (1447-1500).

Around 2 km from Magliano in Toscana are found the evocative ruins of the Rectory of San Bruzio.
