MAGLIANO IN TOSCANA

San Bruzio

RECTORY OF SAN BRUZIO, MAGLIANO IN TOSCANA
Monte Argentario and Costa d'Argento, Grosseto

The ruins of this beautiful church are situated about 2 km East of Magliano in Toscana. To reach San Bruzio you must follow the following road: from Magliano first take the road that geos towards Orbetello, and a few hundreds meters after you must turn on the left at the crossroad taking the road that goes to Marsiliana, after little more than a kilometer on the left are visible in a field the remains of the Romanesque-Lombard church of San Bruzio (San Tiburzio).

San Bruzio is one of the most refined Romanesque monuments of the Maremma. The rectory of San Tiburzio (San Bruzio) was founded around the 11th century by the Camaldolesi and finished towards the end of the 12th century. Originally the structure of the church has a Latin cross plant (length 32 m, width 12 and 20 at the transept). Today, of the rectory, after centuries of abandonment, survives the rests of the presbitery, two parts of the transet and traces of the octagonal cupola. The apse of the church is surmount from a half-dome and is decorated externally from themes with blind-arcade and pilaster strips and has three narrow symmetrical window. Between the decorative motives are of importance the capitals in French style, decorated with leaves and anthropomorhic heads. The external walls of the rectory, in particular the part of the apse, are fine worked and enriched with agile semicolumns joined from small archs. In some details of the structure, as an example in the decorations of the apse, in the capitals of the columns and the lightness of the structure, we can note the beginning of the development of a primordial Gothic. In the few remains of today we can admire many sculptures and we can just imagine which was the splendor of the church in the times of its maximum splendor.
