Manciano is found in the center of an area of greatest archaeological importance, at approximately 60 km from Grosseto, 18 km to the south-west of Pitigliano and 40 km to the northeast of Orbetello. The town, situated on the top of a hill at 444 meters of altitude, is dominated from the Rocca, today seat of the municipality.
The village of Manciano was founded as an important fortress of Aldobrandeschi between the twelfth and thirteenth century, it was then from 1416 under the Republic of Siena, and in 1455 became a possession of the Orsini, Count of Pitigliano.
In the municipality of Manciano there is the famous spa village of Saturnia.
