The Maremma is a vast area of southern Tuscany that extends inland from the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) to Mount Amiata, while along the coast it extends from the Gulf of Follonica to the border with Lazio. Ancient land of Malaria, now is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Tuscany, still little known, except in some coastal towns like Castiglione della Pescaia and Follonica.
The Maremma can be divided into two distinct areas: the internal hilly and mountainous area, land of mines, livestock, cowboys, and forest; and the coastal area rich with beautiful beaches, lagoons and marshes and villages that have not changed their appearance, with large coastal areas remained virtually intact.
In Maremma, there are numerous Etruscan and Roman historical evidences, as in Vetulonia, Populonia, Roselle, Ansedonia, Pitigliano, Saturnia and Sovana. The following centuries have left as a witness the remains of several castles and fortresses in addition to beautiful villages still intact as Massa Marittima, Castiglione della Pescaia, Montemassi, Porto Ercole, Pitigliano and Sovana, just to name a few. There are numerous protected natural areas along the coast as the Natural Park of Maremma, the Tombolo of Feniglia in the Argentario, the Lagoon of Orbetello, the Marsh of the Trappola and the Lake of Burano.
