Massa Marittima is located in the province of Grosseto, the town is only 20 km from Follonica and the sea. The city sits on a hill, 380 metres above sea level, overlooking the plain of the River Pecora and the Tyrrhenian sea coast between Punta Ala and Populonia, the view embraces the entire Gulf of Follonica, including the islands of Elba and Montecristo.

By Car: Massa Marittima is easily accessible from Grosseto or Livorno through Aurelia, a road to 4 lanes, passing just 15 km from the town, the exits to be used are those of Follonica est for those coming from the north and Scarlino for those coming from south. 

Coming from Siena or Florence an alternative route is the SP 73, which passes through the villages of Rosia and Frosini, shortly after Frosini, turn right onto the SS 441, you pass close to the Abbey of San Galgano, Prata and finally arrive in Massa Marittima.

By Bus: Massa Marittima is served by regular daily RAMA bus services that connect it to Siena, Grosseto (Grosseto Station-Ribolla-Massa Marittima), Follonica, Gavorrano (Gavorrano Station), Larderello, Montieri, Piombino. The station of Follonica is connected to Massa Marittima also by bus run by the railways (Ferrovie). 

By Train: The nearest station is in Follonica (20 km), located on the railway line Genoa-Rome, from the station depart bus links to Massa Marittima. 

By Air: The nearest airports are those of Pisa-Galileo Galilei, located 128 km away, and Florence-Peretola Amerigo Vespucci, located 131 km away. The airport of Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci, is 215 km away.
