Monte Argentario is a promontory of southern Tuscany in the province of Grosseto, from which is about 40 km. Entirely mountainous, the highest peak is Monte Telegrafo (635 metres), Monte Argentario is joined to the mainland by two strips of sand, the Tomboli (ayres) of Giannella and Feniglia, within which lies the lagoon of Orbetello. The two main centers are Porto Santo Stefano, where are the headquarters of the municipality, and Porto Ercole.
Inhabited since antiquity, in Roman times was the property of the gens Domizia. In medieval times it became first a fief of the Abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome, then a possession, first of Aldobrandeschi, and later of the Orsini, finally of the Republic of Siena. In 1557 Monte Argentario became pert of the Stato dei Presidi. In 1815 the Argentario also became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
