Forte delle Saline

FORTE DELLE SALINE, ORBETELLO
Monte Argentario e Costa d'Argento, Grosseto

The fort of Saline is located near the exit of Porto Santo Stefano-Giannella of Aurelia, take the exit towards Porto Santo Stefano, after a few meters before the bridge turn right onto a dirt road in short leads to the fort, which is already visible from the main road.

The fort is located on the left bank of the river Albegna near its mouth. It was originally built, in the fifteenth century, as a tower by Siena, subsequently, by the Spaniards, the tower of Siena was incorporated in the fort with barracks, walls, ramparts and moat with a drawbridge. The two buildings are still visible.

The fort was placed for control of the salt that was located on the opposite bank of the river and also served as a river port and customs. The complex consists of a four-sided fence consisting of a thick wall with battlements rather large in order to be able to arrange his artillery. At the four corners are: a strong tower facing the sea, a small bastion on the opposite corner and two other bastions in each of which is a circular bartizan (one indoor and one outdoor dome). The lower part of the enclosure walls is reinforced in the corners and marked by a curb stone. The tower, which protrudes outward, has a height equal to three times that of the enclosure and shows, at the top, a series of arches on shelves.
