Roccastrada is in good position at 475 meters above sea level in the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) of Grosseto.
Roccastrada developed since the Middle Ages as a fortress of Aldobrandeschi. In the fourteenth century the Republic of Siena extended its control over Roccastrada and kept it until the final conquest of the Republic of Siena from Florence in 1555, from this year onwards Roccastrada joined permanently in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
