Sorano is located a short distance from Pitigliano and Sovana, in the extreme south of Tuscany in the area known as Area del Tufo (area of Tuff).

Sorano is a beautiful medieval village set along the Lente river valley, in a landscape of strong suggestion, where are scattered dozens of tuffaceous spurs from the most varied and bizarre forms.

The village is dominated by the Orsini fortress, originally built in the fourteenth century but completely renovated in 1552, while at the center of the village lies the Leopoldino Sasso, a rock fortress, built in the eighteenth century, with the construction of a high wall and a square bastion.

To visit the village should park your car in the area of the Orsini Fortress, from here, visit the fort and the museum, then with a beautiful paved road you will reach the historical city center where is the Sasso Leopoldino, from here you can cross the old ghetto full of picturesque alleys, arches, stairways, balconies, and wine cellars dug into the tuff. From here you can leave the village along the Porta dei Merli, and reach the river Lente, beyond which are many "vie cave". The "via cava" of S. Rocco goes up the other side, beside the ruins of the church of the same name (also accessible from the road to Sovana), behind which lies a vast necropolis with Etruscan tombs from where you have a beautiful view overlooking the town and the fortress of the Orsini.
