The Fort is situated, in the vicinities of a parking area, on the beach of Marina di Castagneto at the end of the road that reaches the sea from the exit of Donoratico of the SS1 Aurelia. At a first look the structure it's not easyly visible from who reaches it in car because the fort on the land side looks like an house painted in yellow ink, while the side more similar to a fortification, the true the bastion, are the side towards the sea.
The Fort of Castagneto was built in 1785 on plan of military engineer Deodato Raj for order of the Granduke of Tuscany Leopoldo I. The fort is composed from two building: towards the sea it's the bastion with tilted walls and external curtain of bricks, while beside this construction, towards the land side it's a square building, on three floors, destined in origin to accommodate the lodgings and the offices of the garrison, on the foreground were the stables destined to the service of the Cavalrymen, over the main roof of the building are present a turret. The fort was used until 1977 from the Financial police. The fort is currently (2005) in state of abandonment and some of its walls are covered of writings.
