The island of Elba is the largest island of the Tuscan archipelago, it measures 225 square kilometers of area and has about 31.000 inhabitants. The island of Elba, in size, is, after Sicily and Sardinia, the third largest Italian island, and alone accounts for more than two thirds of the total area of the Tuscan archipelago islands.
Administratively, the island is part of the province of Livorno, and is divided into eight municipalities, the most important town is Portoferraio (over 12,000 inhabitants), the other seven municipalities are: Campo nell'Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro , Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba.
The island is mountainous in nature and its coasts are often rocky and very uneven, the highest mountain in the Elbe, Mount Capanne, exceeds 1,000 meters in height (1.018 m) and is located at the western end of ' the island, the one facing Corsica.
