The village of Marciana (around 2.200 inhabitants) is situated along the slopes of the island's highest mountain, Mount Capanne (1,019 meters), at about 375 meters in height.
Marciana is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Elba. Surrounded by woods of chestnut and oak preserves ancient testimonies dating back to prehistoric times up to the Roman period, the archaeological discoveries made in the area can be seen in the Museo Civico Archeologico di Marciana.
The village, during the Middle Ages, became a military bulwark of the Republic of Pisa, that in the twelfth century, built an imposing quadrangular fortress with four bastions. In the fifteenth century the fort was reinforced and restored by Appiani, Lords of Piombino, who controlled this part of the island.
The fort, along with several churches, including the Church of Santa Caterina, is the main historic structure of the town of Marciana.
From this ancient village made of winding lanes, you can enjoy an exceptional view on the islands of Capraia, Gorgona and Corsica.
