Livorno (161.000 inhabitants (2008), 3 meters above sea level) is the most important port city in Tuscany and one of the most important trading ports of Italy. Livorno, from a small village of few houses, it developed into a fierce stronghold thanks to the work desired by the Grand Duke Cosimo I and carried out by Francesco I and Ferdinando I in the late sixteenth century, designed by Bernardo Buontalenti this new port city, which was completed under Cosimo II in 1619, became the pride of the navy of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
