When you start from Livorno on route to Gorgona you'll see the Meloria tower (Torre e secche della Meloria). The original Tower of Meloria was destroyed from the Genoeses in 1284 following the battle of the Meloria. Reconstructed in 1598 it was again demolished because of the due damages to the corrosion and rebuilt in 1709.
Characteristic coastal tower erected on a rock-cliff in the shoals that are extended for around 9 kms to west of Livorno. Four pillars of boulder sustain the ogival arcs that allow, along all of its sides, the free course of the waters. It's a typical example of strengthened medicean architecture. |
