Carrara (66,000 inhabitants (2008), 100 meters above sea level) is known to the world for its fine marble (Carrara marble), which is extracted from quarries in the Apuan Alps. The town is of medieval origin, fought during the Middle Ages between the different powers in the area, in the fifteenth century became a permanent part of the possessions of Malaspina.
Among the historic buildings are the Accademia
di Belle Arti (Palace of Fine Arts), the former residence of Cibo Malaspina dating back to the sixteenth century, via Santa Maria, the most characteristic street of the medieval town which leads to the Cathedral, that is a structure, partly in the Gothic Romanesque, built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, with a beautiful rose window. In nearby Alberica square, the most noble square of the city, there are some interesting buildings of the seventeenth century as the palace of the Conti del
Medico and the Palazzo delle Logge.
