LUNIGIANA
|
Lunigiana is an area of north-western Tuscany, embedded between Liguria and Emilia Romagna, and formed by the High and Medium Valley of Magra. Its name derives from the ancient city of Luni, a Roman colony that was of importance relevant to the territory until the early Middle Ages.
Lunigiana has always been a border area of Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Liguria, the valley of the Magra in the past has been the most important route linking the Po valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea, due to this strategic position, the territory of Lunigiana is dotted with castles and fortified places, which have seen the alternate domination of Lucca, Florence, Genoa and Milan. In medieval times it was crossed by the Via Francigena linking northern Europe with Rome. More than 120 are the castles and fortified villages of Lunigiana, the most interesting from a tourist point of view are: Pontremoli, Fivizzano Fosdinovo and Caprigliola.
