Massa-Carrara

Massa (70,000 inhabitants (2008), 65 meters above sea level) is located between the Apuan Alps and the sea along the stream Frigido, the city is formed by an ancient part dates back to medieval times, when it was founded as a fortified town, the city had considerable development in the sixteenth century, when it was ruled by Cibo Malaspina. 

Today Massa has its center in the Piazza degli Aranci (square of the Oranges), full of orange trees, on which stands the Palazzo Ducale Cibo Malaspina, just beyond the end of Via Dante Alighieri is the Cathedral, which houses the burial Cibo Malaspina and bishops. The city is dominated by the imposing fortress built by the Malaspina between the fifteenth and sixteenth century.
