Buggiano Castello, situated on a small hill, is the historic core of the municipality of Buggiano, where since medieval times there was a castle; lower down, in the plain below, formed another village, now Borgo a Buggiano, home to the cattle market.
The castle, very important strategically, was contested during the thirteenth and fourteenth century between the republics of Florence and Lucca, but since 1339 Buggiano and all the Valdinievole became Florentines possessions. Buggiano Castle was the seat of the City and Podesteria until 1775, then the administration was transferred to the Borgo.
