Uzzano is a characteristic village 3 km from Pescia in province of Pistoia. In order to reach it from Pescia, take the road near the Church of San Francesco that goes up on the hill on the left side of the Pescia river.
The foundation of Uzzano happened in medieval age when a noble family from Lucca built a castle. In 1108 the castle was the residence of Ermanno from Uzzano. In 1281 Uzzano was placed under protection of the city of Lucca. From 1339 Uzzano passed to make part of the Republic of Florence, then had a podestà and a garrison to the protection of the rocca, that was belived one of the strongest of the time. In the following centuries the village suffered a long period of isolation that has allowed the conservation of its historical center. The castle was pulled down in 1832, of the ancient defensive system, built in 14th century, Uzzano conserves some part of the town-walls.
Uzzano lies at 250 amsl, the village is much characteristic with ancient stone paved streets, it has two interesting buildings: the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, that represents an important testimony of the architecture of 13th century; and the Church of the Ss. Jacopo and Martino whose construction begun in 13th century and with the addition of the apse in 16th century it was finished, from the church enjoy a beautiful panorama on Pescia and the Val di Nievole.
