CHURCH OR SANTUARY OF THE MADONNA DI SAN BIAGIO

The Church or Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio is found at the slopes of the hill of Montepulciano, in bottom to a tree-lined avenue flanked from cypresses, it was built from Antonio da Sangallo the Old between 1518 and 1545 and represents a masterpiece of 16th century Tuscan art. The origin of the church is tied to a miraculous fact happened on 23 April 1518, when two women and a shepherd, passing in front to a fresco representing the Madonna with the Child and San Francesco, saw that the eyes of the Virgin moved like if she were alive. The church, is Greek cross with a dome in the center and a semicircular apse, it has two bell towers and it's in travertine. The interior in baroque style is frescoed, has a beautiful greater altar of 1584 with marble dossale with four statues of Saints, work of Ottaviano Lazzerini, over to the altar it is a stained glass-window with a Madonna and Saints work of Michelangelo da Cortona.
