The Church or Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio is situated at the foot of the hill of Montepulciano, in the bottom of a driveway lined with cypress trees, it was built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder between 1518 and 1545 and is a masterpiece of the sixteenth century Tuscany art. The origin of the church is tied to a miraculous event took place on 23 April 1518, when two women and a shepherd, passing in front of a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child in her lap and St. Francis, saw that the Virgin's eyes moved as if she was alive
The church in travertine, has a Greek cross plan with central dome and a semicircular apse and two bell towers. The Baroque interior is frescoed, has a fine high altar with reredos of 1584 with four marble statues of saints, work of Ottaviano Lazzerini, above the altar is a stained glass window with Madonna and Saints by Michelangelo da Cortona.
