SAN GIMIGNANO TRAVEL GUIDE |
Val d'Elsa Senese, Siena |
In the Middle Ages San Gimignano was an important stop for pilgrims on their way to Rome along the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and their power. Although only 14 tower-houses have survived, San Gimignano maintains its medieval atmosphere. The town also houses several masterpieces of Italian art of the fourteenth and fifteenth century including works by Benozzo Gozzoli, Ghirlandaio and Pollaiuolo.
