MUSEUMS OF SAN GIMIGNANO

In the historical center of San Gimignano are found several interesting museums: the Civic Museum with the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the Chapel of Santa Fina, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Ornithological Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Spezieria di Santa Fina. The entrance to the museums is facilitated from the existence of a cumulative ticket of the cost of 7.50 €.

The visit to the museum begins from the Palazzo del Popolo (13th century) where first we admires the Camera del Podestà, with 14th century frescoes of Memmo di Filippuccio and Azzo di Masetto, and then we passed to Sala Dante, with the wonderful Maestà by Lippo Memmi. The museum route continue in the Pinacoteca, that collects works of florentine artists of the second half of 13th century like Coppo di Marcovaldo, Azzo di Masetto, and sienese artists of the second half of 14th century like Memmo di Filippuccio, Lippo Memmi, Niccolò di Ser Sozzo; others rooms are dedicated to the artists who have operated between the 14th and 15th century like Taddeo di Bartolo, Lorenzo di Niccolò; and then the florentines Filippino Lippi, Benozzo Gozzoli and Sebastiano Mainardi, until reaching more important work of the museum: the great altar-piece of the Pinturicchio, painted in 1511. The route finishes with the visit of the Torre Grossa built in 1300, this is the highest tower of the city, from it is possible to enjoy a wonderful panorama.

Timetable: from March to October: every day 9,30 - 19.00; from November to February: every day 10,00 - 17,30 except 24th December (10,00 - 13,30) and 1st January (12,30 - 17,30); closed 1 January.

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, Museo d'Arte Sacra e Cappella di Santa Fina. (Sacred Art Museum and the Chapel of Santa Fina)

In the Basilica can be admired the frescoes of Bartolo di Fredi, Barna da Siena, Taddeo di Bartolo and Benozzo Gozzoli, beyond to the wooden sculptures of Jacopo della Quercia. In the Chapel of Santa Fina (1468), masterpiece of the Renaissance by Giuliano da Maiano are the frescoes of the history of Santa Fina (1475) executed from Domenico Ghirlandaio and the altar work of Benedict da Maiano. In the Museum of Sacred Art are noteworthy the wooden sculptures of 14th century, the Crocifisso di Giuliano da Maiano and the room of Silvers.

The Archaeological Museum accommodates the archaeological finds of Etruscan-Roman and medieval period iof the zone. We start from the finds of the age of the bronze in order to pass to the etruscan and roman age; are exposed pieces coming from the excavations of Pugiano, the tombs of the Etruscan settlement of the archaic late period of 'La Ripa', and from the hellenistic tombs of Poggio Palloro.

The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art 'Raffaele De Grada' is entitled to the famous Milan painter (1885 - 1957) that chose San Gimignano as election native land. Beyond his works, the permanent collection re-unites the various testimonies of painters like Niccolò Cannicci, Renato Guttuso, Sergio Vacchi, Giannetto Fieschi, Ugo Nespolo and of sculptor as Floriano Bodini and Joachim Schmettau.

The Spezieria di Santa Fina, making part since 1253 of the Spedale di Santa Fina, consisted in “shop” and a “laboratory” of production of medicinal to use in the same Spedale. In the museum are exposed various samples of vitreous shapes datable between the end of the 16th and the 18th century, and above all precious pharmacy pot of the 15th-18th century that still conserves the medicinal substances that served for the preparation of drugs.

The museum accommodates the collection of marquise the Marianna Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona Paolucci, a ornithological collection of the second half of the 19th century of remarkable historical and naturalistic interest. The room of San Francesco has frescoes of the first half of 17th century of Bernardino Barbatelli said “il Poccetti”.

The museum is located in the historic center of San Gimignano and reconstructs the history and appearance of San Gimignano which was between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.  

You will find ceramic reconstructions of the medieval city with its 72 tower-houses, public buildings, fortifications, churches and convents. The thematic areas of the museum are nine: The ViaFrancigena: presentation of the detailed graphics of the via Francigena; The city of beautiful towers: in 1:100 scale reconstruction of the entire historic city center; Inside the tower: architectural reconstruction of a tower house sectioned and its interior spaces; One day in town: theatrical setting for moments of medieval life within the city walls; Witnesses of the time: panels illustrating the history of San Gimignano, the Etruscan era to the present day; Outside the walls: details of peasant and artisan life outside the walls of fortification; Palace life: cross-section reconstruction of a building with its various rooms; Architectural reconstruction of the convent of San Francesco completely demolished in the sixteenth century; ... of passage: area with interactive information on the stages of construction of the works exhibited in the museum and to study the historical and scientific aspects of Medieval Tuscany.
