Built in 1560 by order of the future Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de' Medici, the Medicean Fortress is located in the heart of Siena, it was built where it was located the old Spanish fortress destroyed by the Sienese in 1552. Restored in the second half of the sixteenth century by Baldassarre Lanci assumed its present form with large square bastions at the corners.

Inside the Medicean Fortress, there are two interesting exhibitions, the most important is in the basement of the fortress and is the Enoteca Italiana, an institution dedicated to Italian wine, here you can enjoy and admire a collection of the most famous Italian wines (DOCG, DOC and IGT), there are over 1,500 wines, produced by over 600 companies. The other exhibition is managed by the Associazione Siena Jazz and is home to temporary exhibitions.
